Rodney Matthews, born in 1945, grew up in the rural south west of England, in the British Isles. His father was very artistic, and his influence helped nurture Rodney's artistic talent. The walls in his living room were adorned with 30cm high copies of Walt Disney characters, drawn in crayon by his father. Matthews vision is greatly influenced by these figures, as well as the world of nature. He fuses them together to form a unique style of fantasy illustration. He is a devout Christian and often paints Biblical scenes, such as Lament for the Weary, Fear No Evil, Fall Babylon Fall and Peace at Last. From his brief stint as an illustrator at Plastic Dog Graphics in Bristol, England, through the rest of his freelance career, Matthews has painted covers for many science fiction and fantasy books, such as Stephen Lawhead's Paradise War, many Michael Moorcock novels, and J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. Rodney has also painted album covers for bands such as Thin Lizzy, Magnum, Asia, Praying Mantis, and Rick Wakeman. He has also recently collaborated on computer art projects, including work on computer games with Liverpool-based Psygnosis, who released 'Shadow Master' for the PC and Sony Playstation.
