Species II: It's Mating Season... Again

When 2 astronauts complete the first manned mission to Mars, one (Ross) is infected with the same alien DNA that spawned Sil. Any woman who beds Ross is immediately impregnated, with embryos rapidly developing and killing the mother. In the sequel, Hentsridge portrays Eve, a government experiment re-engineered to gain an understanding of how to combat future aliens. When scientists realize that Eve has a telepathic link with Ross, and that these two hybrids hope to couple, the carnage swiftly follows.

H.R. Giger's beautiful creatures are back again in this sweet sequel. However, Giger is only credited with the original species creature design. This time, by his own request. After seeing the final cut of Species II, he did not think that design insight he provided was utilized properly. Regardless, his influence is present in force. 'Tis the season...

Species 3 succeeds in delivering lean, mean B-movie thrills by paring down the franchise's premise to its most exploitable elements – copious nudity and gore. Henstridge's voracious alien/human hybrid Eve dies gruesomely in the film's opening moments, but not before giving birth to an infant, who is rescued by a college professor (Robert Knepper) and grows into the pulchritudinous form of Sunny Mabrey. Unfortunately, she proves to be her mother's daughter in every way by setting out to mate with--and kill--any male unlucky enough to cross her path. While a definite step down in terms of plot and performance quality, Species 3 has glimpses of atmosphere and suspense in addition to the blood and skin shows, and makes good use of H.R. Giger's unsettlingly sensuous creature design, which should please franchise fans, gore hounds, and omnivorous sci-fi viewers. --Paul Gaita (Amazon.com Editorial Review)
